Karen’s Opinion

A Cause with a Goal I Can Reach

Springtime is when everything has a chance to be renewed. I have been working hard to keep walking and get into shape. Bumble Bee Foods has made it easier for me to keep track of how much I walk by giving me a neat website to record my “BeeWell Miles “. Besides having a place to be accountable for my progress, I am able to check game codes from pink Bumble Bee cans to see if I qualify to win one of 15,000 prizes!! If that doesn’t keep me motivated, I don’t know what can!

At the Bumble Bee Foods website, there is a place where I can talk with others who are trying to get healthy too. They have given me tips and motivation and make me feel as if I have partners in my quest. It is fun to compare notes and get ideas for healthy eating and exercise.

Bumble Bee Foods is aware of the fight to find a cure for breast cancer and has gone above and beyond to help fund the research for tomorrow’s cure. They are also aware that some are in the throes of breast cancer and need support during their fight. From 4/1/09-10/31/09, Bumble Bee Foods will donate $0.15/mile for every mile logged at BeeWellMiles.com (up to $200,000) to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength.

Check out the website to see how you can join others in becoming healthier and help others in their fight against breast cancer.

Walk for Breast Cancer

PhotobucketOne of my most favorite people is Paula Deen. While I do not know her personally, I love the person she projects through her shows. I believe her to be an honest, loving person. I appreciate that she genuinely cares for people.

Paula Deen is the honorary chairperson for the Savannah Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series is the world’s largest and most successful education and fund raising event for breast cancer. Since its origination in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure Series has grown from one local Race in Dallas with 800 participants to a global series of more than 120 Races with over 1.5 million people expected to participate in 2008-09. The Race Series has also grown internationally with events in Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico.

Another person that I admire is my friend Laurie. Laurie is, again, raising funds for her race for the cure walk in Dallas. Please go to her website at Our 3 Day and see what she is doing to raise awareness and funds in the fight to find a cure for breast cancer. Mark her blog in your favorites because she has great giveaways and fun while she keeps us informed of her challenge this year. Kudos to Laurie!

Be A Survivor

June is Survivor Month. The National Breast Cancer Foundation estimates that each year, over 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year. If detected early, the survival rate goes up to 96%! Please, find a doctor and get your mammogram scheduled. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram. Poke your mom, sister, friend and any other woman you can think of who has been procrastinating and tell them to get going. Get a mammogram.
