Experiencing the Hill

PhotobucketWhile visiting our son and his wife last weekend, we visited an area of St. Louis that is known as the Hill. The population of this area is predominantly of Italian descent which is why you will find Italian bakeries, sausage shops and other wonderful businesses with Italian names. We visited an Italian bakery and bought cannoli. They were wonderful.

Cannoli are Sicilian pastry desserts. Cannoli consist of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling usually containing ricotta cheese and chopped succade. Succade is the candied peel of any of the citrus species.

The Vitale’s Bakery, where we purchased our cannoli, also sold cannoli shells. My daughter in-law tells me it is a tedious process making cannoli shells and being able to buy the shells is a great time saver.

If you ever get a chance, visit the Hill. You will have an enjoyable experience.
