Country Singers Band Against Coal Mining
Charleston Gazette
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A group of music figures has begun a campaign against mountaintop coal removal.
The campaign, Music Saves Mountains, is sponsored by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Gibson Foundation. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a senior attorney with the council, addressed those attending a meeting Monday night.
Those at the gathering included Emmylou Harris, Randy Travis, Big Kenny Alphin, Dierks Bentley, Delbert McClinton, Kid Rock and J.D. Souther.
Harris said protection is needed for the Appalachian mountains, where country music was born and is celebrated in song.
I do not think these entertainers know the whole story. If they did, they would not be against coal mining but of mining of mountain tops. Their actions do not hurt them. They have enough money. It hurts the coal miners who have families to support. Please research mountain top coal mining, Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 and contact the companies who can make a difference.

Hi Karen.
I’ve read most of the info you provide here and can understand how folks would want to prevent the landscape from becoming an eyesore. However, I wonder just how pervasive the “blowing off of mountain tops” really is. The way they make it sound is that every mountain in Tennessee would be decapitated. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

But in general I think it’s a good idea that a group compaigns for the protection of nature. Just in your case they need to be more infomed.

Coal mining isn’t what it was during Coal Miner’s Daughter time. In fact, I’ve always heard it’s become quite environmental. Sometimes it’s hard to know who or what to believe. There are always so many opinions. I do know we need new ideas, and we need to reduce our dependency on oil for lots of reason. Perhaps coal could help?

I think we should take into account those families that still rely on coal mining, and make sure any action we take has little impact on their financial situations.
Obviously protecting nature is a good thing, however, there needs to be a balance.

People who don’t live here in Eastern Ky don’t really know what’s going on.
It’s easy for people to join a cause that they don’t know anything about.
Especially these “big stars”. They already have a good paying job, so what do they care about all the coal miners job here?
What are all these people supposed to do, if the coal mines are shut down?
hey, we could all go and work for “Big Kenny” Are you going to pay them the wages that they get now?
Don’t send us back to the dark ages.
And fyi: they don’t blow the tops off of these mountains.
Walk a mile in our shoes.
