Good Thing I Bit My Tongue
Yes, I bit my tongue. That wouldn’t be a big deal except I really bit it hard. I took a chunk out of the center and it hurts like h*&&. Why would that be a good thing?
For about 6 years, I have had a throbbing sensation in my lower jaw. Just below my bottom teeth, it hurts. I always thought it was my teeth that caused the problem. At my yearly cleaning, I asked the dentist what I could do about this nagging pain. I spent over $300 on an apparatus to keep me from grinding my teeth while I slept. My jaw still ached. My dentist took x-rays and said my teeth, gums and roots looked fine. My tooth alignment was alright. He could find nothing that would cause such pain.
A week ago Monday, I bit the heck out of my tongue while eating dinner. I just happened to have a cleaning appointment on Wednesday of that week. Finally, the dentist said I might have neuralgia and needed to check with my doctor.
Sure enough, my doctor listened to my symptoms, which have worsened since I bit my tongue and he thinks I have Trigeminal Neuralgia. Finally, I can see a light at the end of this tunnel filled with pain. I am on an anti seizure medicine called Tegretol.
The way the doctor explained that this pain was the result of the nerves receiving the wrong signals. There are two trigeminal nerves, one on each side of the face. The Mandibular branch runs through the lower jaw and teeth. These nerves think something is causing pain and so they send pain sensations. The Tegretol is supposed to relax the nerves enough that the pain stops.
Wish me well please. I feel a bit loopy and sleepy but anything is better than pain.

Ouch! Hope things improve. Did the doctor tell you why the nerves receive the wrong signals? What could cause this?
I hope you feel better very soon. ((((hugs))))

I certainly hope you get some relief and ouch to the tongue biting, I haven’t done that in years, but don’t remember ever taking a chunk out. Have a pain-free weekend.

Biting your tongue does hurt like heck, but if it helped you solve a long time problem, that is good news! Good luck with the new medication. I hear it takes a week or two for you body to completely adjust to taking a new med.

It’s what doctors call suicide disease. Those spasms sure hurt. If it weren’t for your bitten tongue, it might have still been a long way trying to figure out other possibilities. At least it had ended and now is another beginning, much better than before.

After 10 straight years of 24/7 pain, I plunked up the courage to try acupuncture. Worked like a charm!! And didn’t hurt at all (I also went through the dentist, mouth thing, teeth grinding, etc., etc.).

Wow – I’ve never heard of that before! At least you know what it is now and can hopefully get rid of the pain. I don’t know how you put up with it for 6 years!

This sounds awful! I hope you start feeling better soon. Biting your tongue is bad enough but what you describe sounds dreadful. Oh I really hope the meds start working really well for you! Six years is a long time to have something bother you…

[...] you everyone for you good wishes and comforting words concerning my jaw pain. I just wanted to let you know that the medicine seems to be working. Each day my jaw feels better. [...]

I read that, Jeff. My pain is mild and it was making me pretty miserable although it did seem to come and go. I cannot imagine living with chronic pain of that magnitude. No wonder it is called the suicide disease!

Oh my! Was your pain in your jaw? I am so glad that Acupuncture worked.

Is your trigeminal neuralgia the reason why you bit your tongue? I have been having brief episodes for the past two years and was just diagnosed. Now, every once in a while my jaw snaps shut and a couple of times I’ve bitten my tongue, although not hard. I’m wondering if the two are related.

I don’t think that is how it worked in my case. I was just eating and bit my tongue. I hope you get relief. Are you taking any medicine?

I’m glad that you are feeling better. I’m so behind in commenting that I just read this now. I know this is very painful. Stay well.
