We had a nice dinner with friends this evening. I always love it when I don’t have to cook! We noticed that my friend’s new silverware had an unusual feature and wondered why. Does anyone know why this fork has a hook in one of the prongs?
Karen,
I don’t know what it is. I know it isn’t a dinner, dessert , coctail, sardine , or hors d’oeuvre fork. Find the name of the manufacturer then google for a product listing.

So I went to ask.com and found that many salad forks and fish forks are the same size, as well as dessert forks. The notch in the fork is to distinguish the sald fork from the other forks. If it has a notch use it for salad! Also forks with three tines instead of four are supposed to be used for meat, because it has less of a chance to fall through. One more thing I know now that I probably don’t need to.
I have some old fashioned silverware from my great grandma and they have that too. I am not sure but I think it’s just the dessert forks that have them.

Is it to stab the host in the eye if they try to poison you?

I thought perhaps a piece of the fork was broken.
Hubby thinks it’s for picking seafood or something like that.

Or it could be just another factory defect. Did they buy that on sale?

my vote would be for a crustacean fork. Something to help crack open lobster or crab legs without having to resort to the pliers and hammers…
