I Admit It

I have a terrible habit of listening to other people’s conversations. The road trip I went on this past Saturday gave me the opportunity to listen to the conversation of the two women sitting behind me. I could not have helped it. They were talking loudly the whole time! I tried to take a snooze and I may have dozed off now and then only to be awakened with more of their chatting. I wish I had known the people they were talking about. It would have been more interesting to know who was now in rehab if I had known their history. Was it for drugs? Caffeine? Buying too much fabric? Darn, I won’t ever find out.
You would think I would learn to tune people out but I haven’t found a way to do that. I wish I hadn’t heard about the man getting new dentures and how the poison in his body was caused by his rotten teeth. My teeth hurt just thinking about it.

I have the opposite problem. Usually the billions of rotating, swirling thoughts inside my head are so noisy, I sometimes can’t hear when someone is speaking directly to me! It’s why I like writing so much– it’s orderly, and I can be whimsical. In person, I sometimes appear scatterbrained; but it’s not that, I’m usually “multi-tasking” lol.

I often feel out of sorts when I am with more than one person. Large groups make me uncomfortable because I want to hear everything but can’t hear anything.

LOL I have to admit that I have overheard conversations in restaurants because the people were close by or talking loudly. Sometimes the conversations are kinda interesting and sometimes they’re annoying!

Karen have you ever heard the comedian Lewis Black? He has a skit about catching the very end of a conversation and how it drove him crazy. Search Lewis Black, If it weren’t for my horse. If you haven’t seen it, very funny.

I have the same problem. It’s really bad at work because I listen to the women in the cubicles around me…

I found your site through Entrecards. I loved your post. It is so true. I find the harder I try not to listen to people the more I hear. There are times it’s so hard not to butt in. My husband says I need to mind my own, but yet it does make for some interesting conversations on the way home.

The news about the man getting poisoned because of his rotten teeth got me worried for several days–but it didn’t surprise me. When my son broke his front teeth after banging it against a concrete bench, I didn’t hesitate on having it pulled out after seeing it was cut in the middle. The exposed dental root was too near his brain so I got scared and didn’t take a chance.

I understand that the purpose of your post was not to promote drug use or anything like that, but you tagged the post with the word rehab and i have to say, I have been to several rehabs – in and out and in and out of them (more than 5 over the past 2 years) and to be honest I am not proud about it, and instead of trying to get the most gossip about people you don’t even know, why not try being positive about how people are at least trying to better their lives. This one rehabilitation facility in Oklahoma, saved my life. I wouldn’t be here today if I had not been given a second chance at life by this rehab facility.

BUYING TOO MUCH FABRIC!!!! lol lol lol . This made me laugh so hard. My mom is a fabric buying junkie and if there was such a place as fabric rehab I’m sure my mother would be shipped off in a heartbeat. Great post. Don’t feel too bad, I ride BART often in San Francisco and I constantly listen to others conversations.

When I was still in college, I was required to observe classes. One can learn a lot by observing. I still do. The thing that amazes me most is that I often sit at the back of a room–now I am 233 pounds so I am not a tiny little thing–and no one notices me. I have heard amusing things, secrets, etc. Then people can’t figure out how I gopt to know so much.
