Not Having the Blues This Year
So many Christmas holidays are spent trying to keep up a frantic pace. We try to get so much done and find ourselves overwhelmed. That has never been my problem. In fact, I enjoy being out in the crowds. I love to look at the Christmas decorations in the mall and admire those who decorate their houses with lights. It makes me feel like I am in a movie where everyone is scurrying about. The tone is melancholy as no one really connects until they get back to their own homes. Families are the ones who embrace each other and make us feel connected.
I ran across a wonderful post at Nodin’s Nest the brought out some feelings I had not realized were owned by me. I had not been able to put a finger on why the holidays make me sad. DJ helped me to, finally, realize that it is the passing of the moment that gets me all worked up. Too soon the memories are in the past. Time goes too fast.
Keeping her post in mind is how I intend to enjoy my holiday to its fullest. We can’t NOT enjoy the moment because we are mourning the loss of time. Here’s to enjoying the moment and being glad it is here for the taking.

I have many opinions about many things. Let me know what you think.

Since I got married, the stress of the holidays has increased because my SIL is …well, she’s a bitch and she wants a fake holiday full of presents and family events basically so she can scrapbook about it.
To settle things down, I said we don’t have the means to buy for everyone and we don’t really need anything so we would appreciate it if you didn’t buy for us. On top of that, the holiday gathering at our house is a pizza party. No ham, no casseroles, no pies. Just takeout pizza and cheap wine.
The holidays are going to be stress-free and enjoyable for us, but my SIL will probably have a meltdown because she doesn’t have anything for her scrapbook.

The holdisay blues for me relate to be an ex-pat so far from my family. I make long phone calls but the time difference means we don;t even havd Xmas on the same day. But I am throwing myself into Thanksgiving as a new holiday to learn all about and have a generous American host for the day. So that will be fun

i agree. i always feel like i’m rushing around, especially if i’m not able to get my shopping done earlier in the season. it’s hard to enjoy it when you’re stressed out about finishing everything.

Christmas is a frantic time and I believe that it is now far too commercialised and has lost its true meaning. I do like the decorations and lights up though as it helps cheer up those long winter nights.

That is too true. I love Christmas. It’s my favorite time of the year. But I’m not one of those who tries to move it up earlier and earlier every year. It should start after Thanksgiving. It’s a special time, and should be cherished - each moment savored. Time passes too quickly and before we know it 10 years have passed. Christmas is the one time of year where we all feel like children again and can remember the mystery of the season. To me, that’s what it’s all about.

What strikes me is “it’s the end of another year, yikes! where did it go?!” I’m not much of a shopper any more, and this year things will be very simple for us. Also “vein” Happy Thanksgiving, sorry about Christmas, and enjoy yourself!!

I don’t find the holidays sad at all, but I also don’t follow total tradition. It’s all a bit too “hypy” to me. I think it’s best to stay in the moment and take time to think about your family, your life and what you’ve done to make it better. I just take it a day at a time and not get wrapped up in the hype and it seems to work out great!

The holidays are all about family, good food, and friendship for me. I give all year long in many ways….. my family doesn’t do the commercialism. (Although, I do work retail sales…. thank heavens for those who do!)

Aside from my birthday, Christmas is very much my favorite time of the year.. But it seems it has lost the true meaning of it.. The reason why we are celebrating Christmas it is because it is the time when Jesus were born.. So for me, instead of thinking about shopping and all, it’s a good time to spend time with the Lord, thank Him for all the blessings.. celebrate it with my family and just enjoy life as it is..
Advance Merry Christmas to all!

Hey Karen - I can sure relate to this too!
I like Bhings comment above - that’s ideal, but when you have kids life is hectic and can get out of control so quickly.
Since my kids are grown I’ve learned to relax - a little, share the duties and make good memories with my family throughout the year and not concentrate quite so much on the one BIG day

I’ve been through this for a long time Karen. I’m at the point in my life now where I just want my family to be happy. It’s not the gifts or the food that makes them happy though. It’s the time we spend together. We can have fast food for all they care and one gift to open!
As long as we celebrate the real reason for the season, keeping our manger as our center piece and have an enjoyable time together, that’s all that matters.
BTW, I do cook for Christmas! I just don’t worry over it.

Please DO enjoy your holidays
We have to take advantage of all the possible opportunities in our life to be with our family and to have a good time together.
Cook together, sing together, eat together, do everything that brings positive emotions and a cool mindset in
Never worry about things that don’t deserve it

I love everything about these winter-time holidays. They break up the year-round routine and for a few weeks everything looks different: the houses, the towns and the people. Even though most people claim how stressed-out they are because of all the fuss, I can still find holiday cheer on most faces and sparkle in people’s eyes and that’s something that makes everyone beautiful. It doesn’t matter if you decide to celebrate with gifts or no gifts, with special dishes or take-out pizza, you don’t even have to decorate your home. Just choose to be cheerful and colorful for some time, relax and enjoy the holiday season!

OMG, I do the same exact thing. I love the holidays, but sure do miss those when the kids were all sleepy faced 2 and 4 years olds on Christmas morning.
Now, I try to look for ways to make memories every year, cause I know when they’re grown, I’m gonna be so glad we made ‘em.
