Also, Karen, I don't think you can take it personally when something doesn't receive a comment. It is most likely not because of your post, but simply because the reader has nothing to say. Don't take that to mean they didn't enjoy your writing! Some days when I am pressed for time, all I can do is check in with my blogs for a quick read and head out the door. Other times I can go more slowly, comment, and become engaged in the discussion. There could be a lot of reasons for a reader not posting, but please don't automatically assume that it has anything to do with you, your writing, or the entry topic!

I think you are right. I am going to try the forum for awhile just to introduce my blog to new people. If it becomes too much, well, at least I gave it a shot.

That's all you're really going to need in traffic. Your comments usually involve other bloggers rather than no comments between traffic.

I agree with Tina, pretty much the more comments you leave the more you get. At least that has been my experience. People like your comments on other blogs they want to see what you have to say on your own.

I don't know about a service for getting more comments. I find getting out in the blogosphere, reading blogs, leaving commenting, and participating in memes does the trick. I might not get dozens of comments, but I get enough to make me feel like I'm not blogging into a void.
