He Deserves Recognition

Are you aware of the “Lost Boys of Sudan”? 3,800 refugees, dubbed the Lost Boys of Sudan by reporters and aid workers, have been resettled in cities around the United States. These were nearly all boys who had been separated by relatives during the war in Sudan. Can you imagine your child being separated from you and then left to fend for themselves in a war torn country? They endured months of wandering during which thousands died of hunger, disease or attacks by bandits or wild animals.

Olympic officials have chosen Lopez Lomong to carry the American flag during Friday’s opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Games. Teammates chose him Wednesday as a way to honor his and other’s struggles and to send a message to human rights organizations that these atrocities are not being ignored.

Lomong is a member of Team Darfur, a group of athletes committed to raising awareness about chronic violence in the Darfur region of western Sudan.

He was among roughly 3,800 refugees, dubbed the Lost Boys of Sudan by reporters and aid workers, who were resettled in cities around the United States.

Many of the Lost Boys were relocated in my local area of New York State. especially Syracuse and Utica. There’s a great movie about their story, “God Grew Tired of Us,” if you are interested. I am happy to say that many Christians supported helping these boys out despite efforts by the Clinton Adiminstration to keep the issue from Americans. The government made it very political and refused to help. It was churches who beat the drums and gave aid to these boys.

The movie doesn’t touch on the political aspects, but is more about the boys themselves: their plight, their journey, and their discoveries about America. It is a great movie!

Thanks for the information. I am very much interested in this subject. I had no idea how these kids struggled.

It’s awesome that Lopez Lomong has been selected to carry the American flag during opening ceremonies at the 2008 summer Olympics, however, the Lost Boys of Sudan were separated from their families during the civil war between the north and south of Sudan, not in Darfur, which is located in Western Sudan.
